5 Tips For Amazing Wedding Hair and Makeup

Congratulations on your engagement! We know that planning a wedding can be stressful with lots of moving parts. We want you to look and feel your best on your special day. As such, here are 5 tips to ensure getting ready for your wedding goes off without a hitch:

Have an agreed upon getting ready schedule.

As Brené Brown says, clarity is kindness. Your bridal party and vendors will thank you for having clear expectations on how long things take and who has to be where. Marina Georgia Makeup offers complimentary getting ready schedules to all of our brides. Ensuring you and your party arrive in time for their appointment, with clean and dry skin and hair will prevent you from falling behind schedule or worrying about the time. Our artists always strive to ensure the getting ready process is smooth, stress free, and relaxed.

For most styles, we schedule 1 hour for hair and 1 hour for makeup. This accounts for application time, consultation, touch ups, as well as sanitizing tools between clients. We pride ourselves on often finishing ahead of schedule, which allows for appreciated space between wedding events.

Set up a fun and comfortable environment.

When getting ready for your big day, the energy in the room should be positive. Bursting with excitement and wanting to listen to fun tunes which you get ready for? We got you. Prefer to get your services done in silence to reflect on the coming day? No problem. Our artists are always happy to match your energy to ensure you are set up for success. We always say to our brides, this may be the only time all day you are forced to sit and slow down, so we want them to enjoy it.

An ideal location to get ready is somewhere that has bright lighting, a chair (ideally tall, like a bar stool with a back), a table for the artist to place their product as they work, and nearby outlets for any needed hair tools.

Don’t be afraid to speak up about your preferences.

Hair and makeup are entirely subjective and based on personal preference. Our brides want to feel beautiful and special, but most importantly, like themselves. While we may have only known your face for a few minutes, you have known it your whole life and understand how it reacts to products and what looks best. Our artistry is always considered a collaboration where we work together to create a finished look.

At the end of your appointment, your artist will ask if you would like any adjustments (i.e. more blush, less lipstick, etc). Do not be afraid to speak your mind and tell us. Our artists are professionals who want you to be happy with the finished look.

Communicate your expectations in advance.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Phrases like “natural makeup”, “nude lips”, or “smoky eyes” can be interpreted countless different ways. Showing an inspiration photo of the hair and makeup you are hoping for can help avoid miscommunications. Even better is if you have a photo where you love the way you look. The more clear you are about your preferences, the more your artist can cater to you. Our artists always ask if you prefer your makeup to be applied for the human eyes on the day (a lighter touch) or to really pop in photography.

Keep in mind that Inspiration photos are often photoshopped, using extensions, and usually are applied heavily to look good in photography. Be realistic about what your artist can do. Artists can emphasize your natural beauty but can't fundamentally change what you look like.

The best way to ensure you and your artist are on the same page is to arrange a trial. After the trial, you can look in the mirror in different lighting, see how it wears throughout the day, and take countless selfies to check how it photographs.

Be true to yourself.

There is a lot of pressure for brides to do traditional hair and makeup styles. We think that the most important thing is for you to be true to yourself. While our artists specialize in fresh and timeless looks, we strongly encourage all of our clients to be themselves. Whether that means glitter, fun lipsticks, or having a barely there look - we are here to support you. Going even further, since makeup is so subjective and there isn’t one right way to look, we believe that if you like the way you look when you do your own makeup - nobody will ever do it better. If you do want to have professional hair and makeup on your wedding, it will be done exactly according to your preferences.

As a bonus tip, we want to remind brides that at the end of the day their wedding is about so much more than hair and makeup. Who cares if it smudges from tears of joy, wears off hugs from loved ones, or pops a few bobby pins from dancing. Your hair and makeup should help you feel beautiful and special, but should not stop you from fully embracing the excitement of the day.

Your wedding will be one of the happiest days of your life and our artists are here to ensure you look and feel your most confident before walking down the aisle.
